A luxury weekend in Marrakech often comes down to one early choice: staying in a riad in the heart of the medina, or in a villa with a garden a few minutes from the city. This guide helps you decide, pick the area, estimate the budget for two nights and plan 48 hours on site without rushing.

The properties in our selection are rented in full: you share the house with no other travellers. Amenities, from the pool to the hammam, vary from one property to another and are listed on each property page.

Villa or riad for a weekend in Marrakech?

A riad is a traditional house built around an inner courtyard, with bedrooms opening onto it and often a rooftop terrace. In the medina, it puts the souks and Jemaa el-Fna square within walking distance. It is the natural choice for a city weekend: out on foot in the morning, back to the quiet in the afternoon, out again in the evening.

A villa offers something else: a garden, larger outdoor spaces and, depending on the property page, a pool. It suits groups who want to spend part of the weekend at the house, between meals on the terrace and afternoons in the sun, and drive into town for an evening.

On the pool, the rule is simple: many riads have none, most villas have one, and the property page is always the reference. On access, a villa can be reached by car to the door; in the medina, the car often stops at a car park or a nearby square and the last stretch is on foot. On space, a riad is lived between patio and terrace, a villa outdoors in the garden. Services such as housekeeping or breakfast are never automatic: they depend on the property and are set out on its page or by our team.

Which area for a weekend in Marrakech?

The Palmeraie stretches north-east of Marrakech, 15 to 25 minutes from the medina depending on traffic and about 25 to 30 minutes from Marrakech-Menara airport. On a short stay, where every hour counts, that proximity matters. Villas are scattered among palm and olive trees, often with a large garden. It is a good balance for a weekend that alternates rest at the house and outings in town.

The medina is the historic centre of Marrakech, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Riads are spread across several neighbourhoods: Mouassine and Dar el Bacha near the souks, Riad Laarous, more residential and quieter, or the Kasbah in the south, near the Saadian Tombs. For a city weekend without a car, it is the simplest option.

The Ourika Road heads south towards the High Atlas. Villas there are 20 to 40 minutes from the centre depending on their location, with mountain views and cooler air. For two nights, it makes sense if the plan is mostly the villa or the valley, less so if you expect several trips into town.

How much does a 2-night weekend in Marrakech cost?

The price shown on each property page is a price per night for the whole property, not per room or per person. To estimate a weekend, multiply that price by the number of nights, then divide the total by the number of travellers: that gives you the accommodation cost per person. A large house that looks expensive per night can therefore cost less per person than a small one, as long as it is full.

Three things change the amount: the dates and season, the size of the property, meaning the number of bedrooms and the capacity, and its amenities. So compare like with like, for example two four-bedroom properties, rather than a small house and a large one.

Each property's price is on its page, and the starting price of our whole villas in Marrakech is given in the frequently asked questions below. If your budget is tight, our affordable villas selection lists them from lowest to highest price. Also keep a line for everything that is not accommodation: transfers, meals and activities, which depend on your choices.

A simple 48-hour plan

Day one, arrival. Settle in early in the afternoon and take time to discover the house. The end of the day is spent in the garden or on the riad's terrace, depending on the property. In the evening, head to Jemaa el-Fna square, which comes alive at nightfall.

Day two, medina and rest. In the morning, before the heat, wander through the souks; from a riad in the Kasbah, the Saadian Tombs are close by. In the afternoon, back to the quiet: the pool if your property has one, the patio or terrace otherwise. In the evening, dinner at the house or in town.

Day three, departure. Depending on your flight time, keep a quiet morning at the house or plan a short outing: from the Ourika Road, the valley and its Berber villages are within reach; from the Palmeraie, a walk among the palm trees. Allow about 25 to 30 minutes between the Palmeraie and the airport.

Mistakes to avoid

Choosing a property from a single photo. Check the capacity, the number of bedrooms and the amenities on its page, starting with the pool.

Assuming a riad has a pool. Many do not; those that do are grouped in our selection of riads with a pool.

Underestimating travel times. From the Ourika Road, allow 20 to 40 minutes to the centre for each round trip; over two nights, it adds up.

Forgetting the walk in the medina. The car often stops before the riad's door, which matters with luggage: ask about access to the riad you choose.

Comparing prices per night without dividing them by the number of travellers, or comparing properties of different sizes.

Sending a request without dates or the number of travellers. Our team needs both to confirm availability.
